Shellie Emory Evans, 87, of Harrisburg, passed away on March 7, 2024, in Jubilee Assisted Living of Florida, Weston, Fla., after a long illness. Shellie was born on Feb. 23, 1937, in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Patricia (Johnson) Evans, who he met on a school bus bound for junior high school in South Carolina. Not wanting one of those "big head Evans boys," as her family referred to them, to sit next to her, Ada, not known for her subtlety, put her books in the empty seat next to her and stared out the window. Shellie walked over, picked up her books, sat down and placed them in his lap. They were married Jan. 31, 1959, a union that lasted 57 years.
The couple came to Pennsylvania for employment in 1960. In 1961, Shellie joined the United States Army, primarily serving as a Supply Clerk. His Army service included a nearly two-year tour in Verdun, France. After receiving an Honorable Discharge from active duty in the Army in 1964, Shellie worked for the U.S. Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg, Bethlehem Steel Corp in Steelton, and IBM in Mechanicsburg. He retired from IBM July 31, 1993, after 25 years of employment. While in semi-retirement, Shellie drove a bus for Capital Area Transit and the Central Dauphin School District.
He was a devoted servant and member of the Camp Curtain Memorial Mitchell United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee and a member of both the Men’s and Gospel Choirs. Additionally, he was entrusted with unlocking and locking the doors of the church. In his spare time, Shellie enjoyed gardening, yardwork, volunteering at the church soup kitchen, and doing chores from his loving wife!
Shellie is survived by his daughter Sharon Michele Evans Bryan (Marlon) of Florida and son Patrick Evans (Cheryl) of Virginia; two brothers Ernest Evans (Philadelphia, PA.) and John Evans (Orangeburg, S.C.); seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
