Robert Willoughby Chapman Sr., 86, of Harrisburg, PA peacefully transitioned into eternal life on Friday, April 12, 2024, with family by his bedside. Born on October 13, 1937, in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the son of the late Cecil and Anna Willoughby.
Bob, as he was known by many, graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in the class of 1955. He received an Associates Degree from the Harrisburg Area Community College and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Bob honorably served in the United States Army, and was a Police Officer on the Susquehanna Township Police Department for five years. He worked 41 years in the U.S. Postal Service and retired in Executive Management positions to include Postmaster, Harrisburg, PA.
Bob grew up in the First Zion Baptist Church in Edgemont and served 20 years as Sunday School Superintendent. In later years, he was a devoted member of True Light Grace Ministries in Harrisburg. Bob was past president of the Susquehanna Township High School Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Susquehanna Township Lions Club. Bob was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He enjoyed landscaping his yard, listening to old school music and was an avid bowler and golfer for over 60 years.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Avis M. Chapman, his parents Glover and Lougina Chapman and brother Rev. Alton H. Willoughby. He leaves to celebrate his life, his son Robert W. Chapman Jr., siblings Esther Williams and Rose Gaynus (both of New York) and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
