Rev. Dr. H. Garnett Lee, age 97, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 3, 2010. He was born May 29, 1912 the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. H. Garnett Lee, Sr.
He was a graduate of Lincoln University, A.B. College, S.T.B. Seminary, Magna Cum Laude. In June 1962 Lincoln University conferred upon him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity. Pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 1935-1947, during this pastorate, a new Church was built.
While in Oklahoma, served as moderator of Rendall Presbytery and Canadian Synod. Organizer and Charter member of Oklahoma City Urban League. In June, 1947, became Pastor of Capital Street Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg until he retired in 1977. During this pastorate the new Capital Church was built. Since coming to Harrisburg he served as moderator of the Presbytery of Carlisle, member of the Board of United Churches of Greater Harrisburg Vice-President of the Dauphin County Branch NAACP, member of Migrant Workers Committee for Pennsylvania Council of Churches, member of the Governor's Committee for the Aged, four times a Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. He served as Chaplain of the Senate of Pennsylvania and Harrisburg Hospital; was a Charter member of Harrisburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Dr. Lee is survived by two daughters: Gwendolyn Turner, of California and Jocelyn Lee, of Arizona. Three granddaughters: Kelly Turner and Kim Turner, of California and Cynthia Johnson, of Arizona. He was predeceased by his wife, Ivy Bernice Lee.
An inurnment service was held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Tucson, AZ on Sunday, January 17, 2010. A memorial service for Dr. Lee will be held at Capital Presbyterian Church, 14th and Cumberland Streets, Harrisburg, PA 1713 on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.
