In Loving Memory of Paula S. Scipio-Hopkins

With hearts full of love and sorrow, we celebrate the life of Paula S. Scipio-Hopkins, who departed this world peacefully on March 29, 2025, in North Carolina.

Born on January 1, 1953, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Paula was the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Cox-Scipio. She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sisters—Gayle Ann and Mary Theresa—and her brother, Robert A. Scipio.

From a young age, Paula carried a light that could warm any room. She graduated from Martins Ferry High School in 1972, proudly earned her cosmetology license, and later planted roots in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There, she worked for over 20 years at Polyclinic Hospital, where she brought comfort, care, and compassion to all who crossed her path.

Paula was the heart of her family—a devoted wife, nurturing mother, adoring grandmother, and proud great-grandmother. Her love was fierce and limitless. She never let a day pass without reaching out, calling, or checking in. Her joy was found in the laughter of her grands and great-grands, to whom she gave affectionate nicknames like “The Professor” and “The Attorney.” She made everyone feel seen, valued, and deeply loved.

A die-hard fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ohio State Buckeyes, Paula’s spirited presence during football games was unmatched. But it was her wisdom, compassion, and quiet strength that left the deepest imprint. Even in illness, she never complained—always listening, always encouraging, always giving, even when she had little to spare. “What can I do with it?” she’d say, giving her last to someone in need.

Paula had a soul too beautiful for words and a smile that could ease any burden. She lived with open hands and an open heart, touching countless lives with her kindness and grace. Truly, she was an angel among us.

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Ronald I. Hopkins, and her beloved children: Yulanda Tulloch (husband, Orville), Douglas Johnson II, Anna Barnes (partner, Lonnie Jackson), and Aaron M. Hopkins. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Ashlii Randolph, Jalissa Johnson (partner, Greg Brown), Jaeden Johnson, and Nekhi Tulloch; and her precious great-grandchildren: Ra’Sheem Stancil, Laylanie Randolph, Jayceon Brown, and Jae’lyse Johnson.

She is also survived by her loving sisters: Debra Brykalski, Michele Scipio-Dillard (husband, John), Madelyn Scipio-Reed (husband, Wayne), and Dorothy Scipio-Peterson (husband, Roy); and her dear brothers: Steven Scipio (wife, Tonia), Jon Scipio (wife, Rachel), Bill Scipio (wife, Jan), and Louis Scipio (wife, Natti). Paula’s love extends to a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews—each carrying a piece of her heart forward.

“Your wings were ready, but our hearts were not. We’ll carry your love with us, always.”
