Oscar James Gunning, Jr., departed this life at the age of 76 on March 16, 2025, at home. Born on March 15, 1949, Oscar was a man of unwavering dedication and passion. Whether through his love for music, his skilled craftsmanship as an electrician, or his years of service as a pastor, he touched the lives of many and left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community.

He pursued his love for music early in life and found immense joy in sharing it with others. A proud graduate of Millersburg University, Oscar earned his degree in music theory and composition and made significant contributions to his field. In addition to his musical talents, he was a skilled electrician by trade. He owned and operated his own electrical business, where he applied his expertise and dedication to serving his community.

For 15 years, Oscar faithfully served as a pastor, providing spiritual guidance and support to many. Affectionately known as Reverend to some and Junior to others, he touched countless lives.

An avid basketball fan, Oscar had a deep love for the sport. His favorite professional team was the L.A. Lakers, and in his earlier years, he was actively involved with the local Harrisburg High Cougar basketball team. In his spare time, he loved to travel, forming many friendships and relationships across the U.S.

Oscar was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Gunning, Sr., and his mother, Thelma Gunning.

He leaves behind his beloved daughters, Martha Gunning-Holton (Terry) and Cheryl Marie Gunning; his grandchildren, Aunyia N. Fields and Andrew Treyvon Gunning. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon Gilchrist (Charles Wright) and Marla Gunning; his brothers, Rodney Gunning (Connie) and Roscoe Gunning (Anique); and his nieces and nephews: Janeé Gilchrist-Corbin (Noel), Keisha Gilchrist-Broomes (Chris), Aja Gunning-Paige (Bryan), Aaron Gunning (Tonya), Amber Gunning-Cosme (Juan), Quion Gunning, and Qyler Gunning. Additionally, he leaves behind a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

Oscar will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and a lifetime of cherished memories.

Mr. Gunning's viewing will begin at 10:00 until the Celebration of Life service at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Hooper Memorial Home, Inc., 3532 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
