Merlie E. Poles

Merlie Elaine Poles, born on January 27, 1923, to the late Laura Taylor, was a devoted servant of God, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication that will be cherished by all who knew her.

Merlie was a pillar of strength in her family and community, known for her warm heart, radiant smile, and unwavering faith. Her life was marked by service to others, particularly through her role as Treasurer for the African American Missionary Crusade, where she ensured that the organization's mission was supported with care and precision.

Merlie's deep faith was reflected in her commitment to her church, Christian Fellowship Church in Harrisburg, PA. She became affectionately known as the "Punch Lady" during Vacation Bible School at Fellowship Bible Church in Philadelphia, PA—a role she embraced with joy and enthusiasm, bringing happiness to all who attended.

Her professional life was one of dedication and compassion. For 20 years, Merlie worked at Presbyterian Hospital, starting in housekeeping and eventually becoming a Nursing Assistant. Her kindness and dedication to the patients she served left an indelible mark on her colleagues and the many lives she touched.

Outside of her professional life, Merlie lived life to the fullest. She had a passion for baking, delighting her family and friends with her delicious creations. She also loved to travel, exploring England and the Caribbean, where she visited beautiful islands such as Aruba, Trinidad, and Barbados.

Merlie was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Philadelphia Eagles and the 76ers. Whether she was cheering on her favorite teams or sharing stories of her own childhood, she brought warmth and joy to those around her.

Family was at the heart of Merlie's life. She cherished every moment spent with her children—Gwendolyn Poles-Corker, Phillip Poles, Arlington Morgan, and Earl Poles—and was a loving grandmother to Anisa Morgan and Simeon Poles. She adored her great-grandchildren, Caleb and Alexander Johnson, and Matthias and Micah Johnson, finding great delight in their presence.

On August 3, 2024, Merlie passed away peacefully to reunite in heaven with her beloved husband, Elmer Poles, and her dear mother, Laura Taylor. She was the last of her siblings and now reunited with Sidney, Ronald, Lester, and Esina Morgan, Una Glean, Simeon and Cephas Green, Vena and Denis Bartholomew, Elvira Nimblette, and a host of family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Her gentle spirit, her love for storytelling, her care for others, and her quiet strength will be deeply missed. Merlie Elaine Poles was a praying woman whose faith carried her through life's challenges, and her love will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her.
