Melvin Farmer was born on December 16, 1962, at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, to Retha Kendley and David Daniel Lyons. He proudly grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, being the eldest among his siblings. Melvin shared 36 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Tammy Faye Farmer. His dedication to his family and wife remained unwavering throughout his life.
For many years, Melvin worked in the healthcare field in New York City and Maryland as a floor technician and in building maintenance, earning his Associates Degree in Building Maintenance along the way. He was an active member of the 1199 Union and served as a delegate spokesperson for The Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, advocating tirelessly for employee rights.
Melvin's culinary skills were legendary; he loved to cook at any hour, especially excelling at grilling steaks and ribs. He enjoyed entertaining loved ones and was known for his hospitality, humor, and love for music, earning him the nickname "Music Man." He cherished his family dearly and always traveled with his earphones, immersed in his favorite tunes.
Melvin is survived by his devoted wife, Tammy Faye Farmer; three sisters: Tonya (Renee) Farmer, Gwendolyn Farmer, and Anntonette (Annie) Lyons; two brothers: Wesley Simmons and David Daniel (Petie) Lyons; five children, including Asia Tacneau, Tameka Tacneau, Melvin David Farmer, Jr. (Lil' Mel), Marquis Kendle, and Kenreal Walker; two surviving aunts: Janice Lyons and Berta Lyons; eight grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
