Louis Phillip Roberts was born to the late Louis W. and Annie Barksdale Roberts in Warren County, Virginia. They later moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where he assisted his father in building houses. His parents sent him to North Carolina to visit family during the summer and he always lamented about how much he enjoyed the train rides.
He graduated from John Harris High School in Harrisburg, PA and later joined the Army for which he served four years. He then graduated from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. During his life he embarked on several endeavors which included amateur boxing and semi pro football. He would always comment that he did not like to fight guys two times bigger then he was but he had to because he was that good. As an athlete he also enjoyed track and field.
Louis passion for African American Literature and studies lead to his love of writing and reading about black history. He would debate about black history with anyone who would challenge him. Music was another one of his passions.
He met and married Rosie Roberts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. To this union one son was born. Community service was important to Louis and Rosie and they ran the food bank in Harrisburg, PA. He worked for the Federal Government traveling to New Jersey. Louis ended his career in Lewisburg, PA prior to retiring to North Carolina with a dream of raising chickens and cows, against Rosie's better judgment. Louis was an active member of St. James United Holy Church of America in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His love for his church, community, and grandson were unquestionable.
He leaves to cherish his memory, son Andrew N. Roberts, Fayetteville, NC, grandson Andrew Roberts II; two cousins Ernest "Bubbles" Roberts (Ann), Harrisburg, PA, Dorothy Dobson, Sacramento, CA; five sisters-in-law, Barbara McIver, Sadie Walker (Nathaniel), Rev. Clarice Chambers (Albert), Bernice Cross, and Edna Cross; special friends Mr. & Mrs. Ellis, Dorothy and the late Charles Hood, Gustavius Townsend, and a host of other relatives and friends.
