Leonard Richard Powell “Dick” was born on January 31, 1926, to the late Pearl Fields and Wilbur Powell in Paw Paw, West Virginia. He was a member of Bethel AME Church and attended and paid tithes at Greater Zion Church. He graduated from Paw Paw High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed at the Carlisle Barracks for 36 years before retiring. He was also employed as a technician at Spring Valley Apartments before retiring a second time and had an impeccable driving record. In his leisure, he enjoyed playing and teaching others to play cards and checkers, doing crossword puzzles, and going to Penn National Racetrack.
He was married to the love of his life Calethia Powell for 67 years, and they had one daughter Veda “Snook” as he called her Powell. Dick’s love for family and friends will be what he is remembered for.
He was preceded in death by his five brothers, Wilmont, Robert, and Raymond “Buck” Powell, Donald Lee Rogers, and Kenneth “Ken” Brumback. Three sisters, Alice Powell Merchason, Irine Powell Gilmore, and Darline “Jean” Brumback Spencer. He was raised with Kenneth Fields. He leaves to celebrate two sister-in-law's Otelia Erwin from Charlotte, NC, and Yvonne J. "Sue" Powell from Martinsburg, WV, one godson Anthony Trueitt, adopted grandson Tymar Dantzler, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
