Laura B. Stevens, 83 went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 18, 2022. Born on November 23, 1938, in Little Rock, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late John W. Thames and Lee Velma Thames (Lewis).
Laura graduated from Carver High School in Union, Mississippi, where she played basketball. After graduation, she moved to Harrisburg, where she was employed by the Commonwealth of PA, State Hospital, retiring after 34 years of service as a Nurse’s Aide.
Laura was a devoted member of North 17th Street Church of God. She served wherever needed, most notable as a Deacon, a Trustee, a member of the Leadership Team, the Food Bank Ministry, Kitchen Ministry and Treasurer of the Women’s Ministry. She started the Clothing Ministry and managed it until it closed due to the pandemic.
Laura was an avid gardener and enjoyed walking thru the neighborhood, thrift shopping, trips to the beach, and spending time with her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.
Laura leaves to cherish her precious memory her daughters Debra and Sandra Steven; her granddaughters Ashley Stevens and Tyeasha Thompson (Mike); her brothers, JW Thames (Charlene), Erven Thames, Kermit Thames (Reverend Ruby); her sisters, Katie Hickman, Geraldine Steele, Pearl Bryant (Howard), Lessie White, Mary Hearn, and Martha Thames; her great grandchildren, Sauni, Gerald, Zahara, Dah’moni, Alexis, Jahcari, De’aisha, and Mike.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Freddie Stevens and her sisters, Cynthia Thames, and Essie Smith.
