Kathryn Payne

Kathryn Payne, 82, passed away at home on October 15, 2024. Born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, she was the middle child of Jean and Harold. Kathryn was a member of one of the first graduating classes of Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale. As an adolescent and young adult, she was actively involved in civic and community organizations. In the 1960s, 

Kathryn helped to register people to vote. In the 1970s, she served as both a Girl Scout troop leader and a PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) president. After having a child, Kathryn resumed her career as an administrative assistant for an attorney and later for organizations such as Harrisburg Area Community College. 

Kathryn was a lifelong Pennsylvania resident and an enthusiastic fan of Pittsburgh sports teams, even after moving to Harrisburg over fifty years ago. Throughout her life, she loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. 

Kathryn especially enjoyed plays, musicals, and performances featuring African American casts. Kathryn’s brother, Jimmy, and sister, Betty, both predeceased her. Her extended family includes a former sister-in-law, two nephews, and two nieces. 

Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Celeste.
