Joyce Ann Green who was affectionately known to her family and friends as âBIRDIEâ departed this life peacefully surrounded by her family in the comfort of her home Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the young age of 72. Birdie was born October 27, 1944 and raised in Harrisburg, Pa and was the daughter of the late Lillian Proctor Cheatham and Lucius Thomas. She received her formal education at the former John Harris High School âPioneersâ and later met her husband Willie and spent more than thirty years in the Washington D.C. area.
During her time in Washington D.C., Birdie volunteered at her youngest daughter Kellyâs school and went on to become the elementary school secretary before leaving after several years of service. She later worked as a leasing agent until she retired and decided to move back to her hometown of Harrisburg to be around her family.
Birdies many joys in life were bingo, playing cards, watching soap operas, reading mystery books, cooking and taking care of her family. She enjoyed sitting around making her only granddaughter lunch and then cheating her at a game of checkers. But more than anything, she loved to talk on the phone to her mom and sitting around the table talking with her baby brother Tim. Tim could do no wrong in her eyes. Birdie and Tim had a special brother/sister bond like no other.
Along with her parents Birdie was predeceased by her step-father William Cheatham and her loving husband of 44 years, Willie Green. She leaves to celebrate her life two daughters, Vickie Lynn Thomas (Gerry) and Kelly Lee Green, both of Harrisburg Pa; four step-daughters, Deloris Penn (Steven), Mary Reid (Calvin), Karen Hart (Darryl) and Felisa Green; five brothers, Rodney Thomas (Gloria), George Thomas (Beverly), William Bill âShuggâ Cheatham, Tony Cheatham, Timothy Cheatham; one sister, Lisa Cheatham, all of Harrisburg, Pa.
