In Loving Memory of Ira D. Walker Jr. (1934 - 2025)
Ira Davis Walker Jr., son of Ira and Agnes Walker Sr, was married to his beautiful wife, Beverly, for 54 years, and their journey together was a testament to enduring love and commitment that honored tradition while inspiring future generations. Born on March 30, 1934, in Danville, Pennsylvania, Bud grew up in a close-knit community where traditional values and a strong work ethic were deeply instilled. He pursued his education at the Broad Town Boarding School, graduating with a sense of purpose and a curiosity about the world. Motivated by a commitment to serve his country, Bud joined the Air Force as a Telecommunication Specialist, a role that allowed him to travel widely and immerse himself in diverse cultures.
While stationed at Westover Air Force Base near Springfield, Massachusetts, Bud's journey took a delightful turn when he met Beverly Ann Delworth. They were married on July 7, 1956, marking the beginning of a 54-year adventure that would see them call home in two foreign countries and four different states. After 20 years of dedicated service, Bud retired from the Air Force in 1972, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, cultural curiosity, and service that continues to inspire both family and community. During his time in the Air Force, Bud also became a proud member of the Masons-a commitment he cherished for over 50 years. His affiliation with this venerable organization deepened his devotion to timeless values, brotherhood, and community support. Through Masonry, he served as the Past Master of Chosen Friends Lodge #43 and the Past Potentate of Himyar Temple #17. Bud forged lifelong friendships and embraced opportunities for personal growth, charity, and civic engagement-principles that resonated with his enduring dedication to service and left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
After retiring from the Air Force, Bud and Beverly embraced a new calling when they learned of a promising opportunity at the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. At a time when the school was taking a bold step toward greater inclusivity by enrolling African-American students, a unique need arose for African-American houseparents-individuals who could provide not only supervision but also cultural insight and genuine care for these young minds. Bud and Beverly answered that call with open hearts and steadfast dedication. For 11 years, they served as houseparents for intermediate boys, creating a warm, stable home environment that balanced the timeless values of respect, discipline, and tradition with a forward-thinking vision of nurturing each student's unique potential. Their daily guidance, support, and mentorship helped these boys navigate the challenges of growing up, instilling in them a sense of pride and the confidence to pursue their dreams. Through their commitment, Bud and Beverly not only enriched the lives of the young men they cared for but also contributed significantly to the legacy of inclusive education and community spirit at the Milton Hershey School.
During his time as a houseparent, Bud earned his Master's degree in Human Services. In 1984, Bud and Beverly stepped down as houseparents, and Bud transitioned into the role of Home Life Administrator at the Milton Hershey School, where he could share his experiences and expertise with other houseparents''. He retired from Milton Hershey School in July of 2000.
During his retirement years, Bud dedicated his time to volunteering at the Hershey Free Church. He also worked with young men and women with intellectual disabilities, helping them enter the workplace with the proper training and support.
Bud is survived by his two children, Buddy and Renee, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Gramps" to his grandchildren, and he will be deeply missed. They will carry on his legacy of kindness and love for family for generations to come.
