Dr. George Hayward Love Sr., 90, transitioned peacefully at Harrisburg Hospital on December 14, 2014. George was born and educated in Philadelphia, the middle child of five children to the late Daisy (Gripper) and Samuel Love. George graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia in 1942. He earned his Bachelorâs, Masterâs and Doctorate degrees in the field of education and sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. He was the first African American H.S. teacher in the Philadelphia school system and to serve as Assistant Commissioner for Basic Education in the Pennsylvania Department of Education. George taught biology and chemistry at John Harris High School and later served as Harrisburg School District Director of Personnel and Director of Division of Special Projects. Georgeâs spiritual formation was strengthened at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Philadelphia and St. Paulâs Episcopal Church in Harrisburg. He took on several leadership positions in the church, such as in the Department of Christian Education for the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. George served on numerous boards and assumed governing roles in many local, state, and national community organizations. He was a Diamond Life member of the NAACP, founder of Beta Pi Boule Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, active member of Kappa Omega chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Club 21 to name a few. Georgeâs many passions included traveling, playing bridge, and mentoring. George is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Hettie Simmons Love, his children George Jr. and Karen; his grandchildren, George III and Beheshteh; nieces and nephews, Marilyn Gates Gutman, Karol R. Logan, Charles Simmons III, Mark Royall and numerous loved ones. Please make donations to the Dr. George H. Love Scholarship Fund which he began in 1992.
