Enos W. Sloane, 83, of Harrisburg, peacefully entered into eternal life March 12, 2010 at Osteopathic Community General Hospital. Enos "Bunny Pete" Sloane embraced the sunset of this life following a lengthy illness with loving family around him. Enos "Pop-Pop" Sloane was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was the last surviving sibling of the late Lucille (Lawson) and Dabner Sloane. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
Enos leaves to cherish his love and memory his devoted wife Frances and their beloved children:, Gil, Billy, Bobby and Jimmy Johnson; Lola Staples Gloria Stanley, Cathleen Tabb, Nancee [Lawrence] Holley, Keith Hopkins, Michael Dorsey; 29 grandchildren and 15 great-grand children, a dedicated brother-in-law, William E. Johnson, niece Landonia Vaughan; cousin Doris Jean George and numerous other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Enos was educated in the Harrisburg public school system graduating from John Harris High School. He received military training while serving in the Navy and Merchant Marines. After military service he received security certification at Harrisburg Area Community College.
He loved organizations and belonged to: American Legion Post 733 for 41 years; Elks Lodge, Charter lifetime member; Knights of Columbus, 4th degree member; Masons, 32nd degree; and The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 710 a life member.
He was a member of St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Harrisburg, PA. He was a former member of First Baptist Church of Steelton for many years.
In 1943, at the early age of 16 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served between 1943 and 1949. He then joined the Merchant Marines and served for over 20 years. (1953-1974). During his military service he received numerous awards including the Good Conduct Medal, the Pacific Service Medal, and the Japan Occupation Medal. As a Veteran; Petty Officer Sloane, received many achievement awards for outstanding service while serving his country in the Armed Forces.
After military service, Enos "Pete" Sloane worked in Security Guard positions for 28 years. He loved working and was an exceptional provider for his wife and family. In his retirement, he was part of the Welcoming Committee at SAM'S Club (1999 - 2004). Enos was a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan, loved traveling, country western music and movies.
Services will be held in his honor at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Harrisburg on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., viewing at 10:00 a.m. and burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Hooper Memorial Home, Inc. is caring for and handling Mr. Sloane's arrangements.
