Donald Wayne Spigner, M.D. peacefully departed this world on Saturday, October 31, 2015, surrounded by his family and friends. "Doc", as he was known in the community, was born on February 14, 1940, in Tyler, Texas to Kermit Spigner (d. 1980) and Jesse Lee McCauley Spigner (d. 1992). Raised in Los Angeles, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Zoology in 1962 at the University of California Riverside. He graduated from the University of California San Francisco in 1966 and later served as a commissioned officer in the US Public Health Service. After his discharge in 1969, he spent a year in Washington, D.C., working the West African Peace Corps desk and soon thereafter began his civilian medical career in suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1975, he moved to Harrisburg, PA, to head the newly established Hamilton Health Center and to serve as the City Health Officer. He helped establish and practiced family medicine to a diverse community at Community Medical Associates for over 30years. In 1994, he helped found the South Central Pennsylvania Sickle Cell Council. Part of that work led to the commission of a United States Postal Service Sickle Cell stamp in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Wilson Spigner, his two daughters, Nicole and Danielle, two stepsons Thomas and Holman, and two grandchildren, Shane and Alexander.
