Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget
Life began for Dorothy Elizabeth Barnes on December 20, 1954 in Washington, D. C. She was born the daughter of the late Anna Bell (Dantzler-Walker) Barnes and Nicholas Barnes, Sr. She was the youngest of 3 children. Dorothy passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 6, 2010 in the Harrisburg Hospital. Dorothy was affectionately known as Dee.
Dee attended and graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1973. She also attended Central Pennsylvania Business School for nursing. She later received her Associates Degree from Harrisburg Area Community College. Dee loved to learn as evident by the loads of books in her home.
Her 1st job was at the Hamilton Health Center. She participated in many community projects sponsored by the Health Center. She worked part time in Boscov's Men's Department for many years. For the past 25 years Dee was employed at Capital Blue Cross as a Claim Support Specialist.
She volunteered at the Bethesda Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Dee was very generous in providing a place for others to stay. Her home was always open to those who made her aware that they needed help.
Dee loved roller skating, dancing and time at the beach. She enjoyed doing creative projects with ceramics. But more than anything she loved shopping and dressing sharp! Many weekends you would see her at the Flee Market selling, but she would be doing more socializing, talking and laughing with people passing by than selling.
Her greatest love was her son Justin who was so dear to her heart. She loved him unconditionally. She encouraged him to be independent and an entrepreneur. Her 2nd greatest love was her granddaughter Asya who was her pride, joy and the light of her life. Asya's mother, Ally Wright, who Dee cared for like a daughter, was encouraged daily by Dee to excel and do well in college. Dee dearly loved her family including her foster mother Marion Hartsfield who was a real mother to Dee, her brothers; Nicholas, James and Robert and her sister Patricia. Wherever Dee went, she would make totally complete strangers, become her friends.
In the words of her son Justin, "She was just a good mom." Dee loved life.
She leaves to celebrate her life her son; Justin Barnes, her granddaughter Asya and Asya's sister Aiyanna and Asya's mother Ally Wright, her foster mother Marion Hartsfield, her brothers; Nicholas Barnes, Jr, James and Robert Hartsfield and her sister Patricia Hopkins, her nieces, Yanna Barnes Jackson, Ahdeanna Barnes, Kimberly Johnson and Miranda Hartsfield, Nephews; Aaron Hopkins, Marcus Hartsfield and Martin Hartsfield, her extended family her God sisters; Geneva Mills, Shirley Warren, Earlene Bryant, Earnestine David, Nadine Muldrew and Ophelia Caldwell-Dames and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
