David A. Harper

David Albert Harper Jr., was born on August 12th 1918 in Thomasville, Georgia to David A. and Janie Tolliver Harper. He was the youngest of four children. In Thomasville, Georgia he attended Douglas High School and was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church. Upon completion of High School he pursued a Bachelor's Degree at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. He served in the US Army during World War II, decorations and citations include the European African Middle Eastern Service Metal with 3 bronze stars, the American Service Metal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Metal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Purple Heart. David worked for a number of years as a educator and principal in the Georgia Public School System. In 1949 he moved to Harrisburg, to work in the Navel Supply Depot, SPCC Division in Mechanicsburg where he was employed for 30 years. David had a beautiful tenor voice. In addition to singing, he enjoyed photography, gardening, fishing, helping others and visiting with his neighbors. He's affectionate known as "The Mayor of Hodges Heights". David was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. George Harper and Allie Harper and a stepbrother, J.B. Grimsley. He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memory, his wife, Altia Juanita; daughters, Dr. Altia Dianne Harper and Evelyn Wyvonia Harper White; son, David Albert Harper III; granddaughters, Marisa Dannette White and Katrina Juanita White; grandson, Charlie Lloyd White, Jr.; son-in-law, Charlie Lloyd White, Sr.; sister-in-law, Irma Grimsley, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. So charming, witty and intelligent... David, will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 20th at Hooper Memorial Home, Inc., 3532 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, PA. A viewing will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Harrisburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Capital Presbyterian Church, 1401 Cumberland Street, Harrisburg, PA 17103.
