Alice M. Moten, 91, of Carlisle, passed to eternal life on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at the Harrisburg Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was born on January 23, 1927, in Carlisle, a daughter of the late Elijah and Fannie (Jennings) Jackson and was the widow of CPL (Ret) Alfred A. Moten, Sr., US Army who died in 1974.
Alice was a 1945 graduate of Carlisle High School and a graduate of the Carlisle Commercial College. She worked for the Commonwealth of PA and retired from the Harrisburg School District in 1993.
From 1960 and until God called her home, Alice was a member of the Wesley Union AME Zion Church on 5th and Camp Street in Harrisburg, PA. She was active in her church. She taught Sunday School, a member of the King’s Daughter’s Club, member of the Lay Council, chaired the Bereavement Committee, a Class Leader and a Deaconess. In the community, Alice was a member of the Red Hat Society.
One of her favorite pastime hobbies, she would sit for hours solving crossword puzzles and word search to keep her mind sharp. She loved to travel. She was blessed to see Paris, Scotland, England and Germany. She loved all types of music, concerts, plays and dancing (especially Dancing with the Stars). One of her favorite quotes: “Do not fear the winds of adversity, remember that a kite rises against the wind, rather than with it.” (Author Unknown) Her favorite scriptures: Psalms 19 and Hebrew 13.
She is survived by her son, Alfred (wife, Eugenia) Moten, Jr. of Harrisburg and Daughter, Tracey (husband, Christopher) Drayton of Denver, Colorado, 8 plus grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends.
She was predeceased by sisters: Magnolia, Constance, Hannah and Mildred and brothers: Gilbert, Lester, Joseph and Gordon Jackson.
